CIFAR

CIFAR is a California centered, global network and innovation hub focused on agri-food systems technologies and housed within the leading food science program in the United States.  CIFAR’s affiliates have realized it is a unique organization that yields high value returns on their membership investment. By understanding the needs of both the business community and researchers, CIFAR offers specialized connectivity of their particular interests with a network of relevant individuals and programs. CIFAR includes 38 member affiliates, 11 advisors, 26 faculty and 8 students.

 

 

 

 

Introducing Student Intern Elizabeth Chen.  Elizabeth is a first year Ph.D. candidate in Food Science and Technology. She earned a B.S. in Food Science and Technology and a B.S. in Biological Sciences with a chemistry minor from Virginia Tech. During her undergraduate career, she served as president for Virginia Tech’s Food Science Club, captained a product development team, and interned with The Hershey Company and PepsiCo. Though her undergraduate research was heavily characterized by antioxidant work, Elizabeth now wishes to explore the mechanisms by which other functional foods work to better understand the benefits they can impart on our health. She aspires to use her studies to reach out to others and guide them to a healthier lifestyle. 

 

 

Introducing Student Intern Daniel Schellenberg. Daniel is a PhD Candidate in Agronomy at the UC Davis.  He earned a Masters in Horticulture from Virginia Tech and Bachelors degrees from the University of Maryland College Park and the Higher Agriculture School in Den Bosch, the Netherlands. He's published three scientific papers and co-authored a book chapter.  As a volunteer, he served as an extension specialist with a USAID funded program in Moldova.  His technical knowledge of cropping systems includes advanced glasshouses and covered horticulture, organic and conventional vegetable production, and perennial fruit and nut crops.  Daniel is passionate about environmental quality in relation to fertilizer management and carbon footprints.
